People get Readings for many reasons but the two most common are Curiosity and Need;
Curiosity is where the term "Curio" comes from and what Reader's were viewed as long ago -- a novelty or "parlor muse" -- something you'd encounter at a party or festival.
Need is a bit more serious in that Need manifest itself in a number of ways;
The list can be rather extensive and in such cases the Reader is important; your ability to find a professional with whom you are comfortable and able to build a solid rapport of trust with. Fact is, you can trust most, it's just the matter of finding that one or two Readers that you "click" with; after all, they will be looking with you into matters of great personal import, so it stands to reason that your relationship be one that simply feels right to you.
You want to find a Reader that is focused on YOU. While they are in business and must work with you as any counselor would a client -- holding to appointment times and parameters -- they are likewise filling a very special role in your life, they must be trustworthy and kind, gracious and loyal; the kind of person that can keep things confidential and when need be, simply be there when you need someone to listen, open-mindedly -- judgment free!
Readers ARE NOT Prophets! We cannot forecast your future in a way that is 100% concrete.
This is a major misconception that has been around for centuries; partly due to propaganda and partly due to how novelists and film writers wrongly assume that this is the case. I can assure you, it is not!
You Always Have Your Free Will
There is Nothing that can Change That.
Most "Prophecy" or "Premonitions" deal with a very small number of people (frequently it's just the person that has the "hunch" or "vision") and even then, it involves a very small window of time, typically in under a year's time, even though there are those prophetic warnings that seem to have spanned eons, something I'll go into greater depth about in my discussions on the Hermetic rule (See: Blogs & Articles "The Prophet's Secret")
Yes, there are those prophecies that are "global" in scale, I happen to have been part of just such a revelation some years back, when psychics and shaman from around the globe were having the same dreams and gut-wrenching sensations about a world-wide disaster. It was something many of us shared for months, each of us quite certain that whatever it was would happen soon (See: Blogs & Articles "Making Headlines") This however is the exception and not the rule; and as I've intimated, more than one person will sense such things -- the Universe doesn't just choose a single messenger when it needs to get word out, it simply allows those with eyes to see, to see. They are the messengers, as a collective.
It's a Gut Feeling. . . we hear this a lot when it comes to the common person that quite literally follows their gut -- a "hunch" or "feeling" that they should do certain things; turning right instead of left or not getting on a particular flight even when their standing at the gate. There are news stories and personal testimonies about this sort of thing that span the whole of history, even within the auspices of the Business/High Finance institutions of Wall Street, the Seats of Government. . . most every aspect of society. All of it a kind of "Prophecy" -- premonitions that we tend to "feel" in a very literal way, "in our gut" -- the solar-plexus region of our anatomy.
This sensation is an expression of Intuition and to a lesser degree "Instinct" -- the more primal aspects of human memory. At the same time this Intuition is a thing we can cultivate and deliberately enhance either knowingly or as a kind of side-effect that comes with experiencing life and of course, striving to be the best we can be at our jobs and other fields of personal concern/attachment (such as why parents intuitively know when their children have been up to "something")
My point is quite simple and deliberate;
IT'S NOTHING MYSTICAL OR MAGICKLE!
The only thing that made it seem such, was the lack of understanding and education known to our ancestors compared to these modern times, and the maturity of being able to accept that truth. That doesn't mean that it's not something empowering, if most certainly is! But, it is something accessible and already a part of everyone's life without having to change your diet, dance about in circles or chant to the heavens -- it's already a part of you! All you need to do now is accept it and in so doing, learn how to work with it and pay attention to it. THIS is what separates the true "Psychic" or "Mystic" from everyone else -- Awareness!
DIVINATION is the name used for the act of "Divining" or, as we call it today, "Reading".
To the chagrin of most, the term "Cold Reading" when it comes to Psychic work is the god's honest truth. . .
. . . just not in the same way our more cynical friends intend it to be.
While I do dive deeper into this point in the article's area I'll offer a brief outline as to what makes them "right" and allow you to decide.
If you are not familiar with Tarot cards, Rune stones, etc. just do a search on line about them and their meanings, that latter part being what's applicable -- their meaning.
Since the earliest of recorded time the images used in an alphabet (written language) had more than one meaning behind them; typically they would at least refer to the things our ancestors depended upon such as forms of livestock, family, home, clan, etc. Systems like Hebrew even infer a numeric value to each symbol in almost the same exact way as Runes, the Celtic Ogham and other ALPHABETS do. That being the case, it seems rather logical that nothing has changed to make them "enchanted" outside our desire for it to be such and one other rarely noted fact; how, for centuries, the written word and even drawings, were seen as a kind of "Magick" -- a special knowledge known only to a select (chosen) few. Quite literally an "Occult" Science that stood as such well into and through the middle-ages.
In other words, if you can Read & Write you are participating in occult knowledge. . .
. . . while this likewise includes mathematics my point is a bit more mundane; things associated with the "Occult" are not instantly evil, Satanic, or corrupting. All such manifestations come about based on how we, as individuals and a people, choose to employ said knowledge. So please, put that in the pipe of the next person that attempts to condemn you on religious grounds, and make them smoke it.
The Tarot (as an example), takes this same reality and makes it a bit more complex by superimposing and connecting several different images upon a single canvass -- each card offering a very specific pattern of symbols that "fine tune" its implication -- the energy and harmonics that image represents.
Adding to this is the Matrix (spread) used when divining (reading) the cards in a group. Regardless the lay-out, the position each card rests in, has its own influence along with how it is related to other cards resting in specific positions throughout the spread. Finally, there is the consideration of "suit" -- how many "coins" or "wands" appear as well as the number of "Major Arcana" cards that come into the display.
If you visit a site like ata-tarot.com or Taropedia you will find the meanings of each card; the single-word association as well as a short blurb describing the what and why of each symbol and/or color within the card. It's the language of the Tarot -- information that's needed in order to READ the cards. . . and this is where I support the cynical claim that "it's all Cold Reading" -- each one of those details are in fact, a definition just as Websters is filled with definitions of every word I've used in this web site; meanings that allow you to understand what I'm trying to convey. . .
. . . did you hear that?
I referring to the sound a light-bulb makes as it comes on in our mind's eye as we start to realize something on a more rational model vs. all the classic rhetoric.
It's Not as Complicated as It Sounds. . . while there is a great deal to be learned when it comes to any oracle system, most of the basics can be learned within a few short weeks and with practice, mastered within a year's time. . . but that's just the BASICS. To be successful and to improve your skill as a Reader you will need to constantly read more books on the oracle of greatest attraction to you at this point in your journey, as well as doing Readings for the many people in life you encounter -- like anything, you can't get better without practice or as they say, flexing those muscles.
Hope I've helped you gain a better understanding as to what it really means to not just be Psychic, but what's involved with getting an actual Reading.

I post this brief statement for two related reasons; to let you know that the majority of those calling themselves a "Psychic" or "Spiritual Advisor" are in fact, honest and good-hearted folk who seek to help and heal and never harm or cause loss. Yet, in the mind of our many detractors, it is promoted that all of us are fakes and con-artists -- PREDATORS!
Yes, there is a truth to what they say but like all zealots, they have elected to "Profile" us -- to stereotype a group of people based on the antics of a few vs. the actions of the many. In other words, they place the idea of being "Psychic" in the same kind of negative niche racists place people of color and of certain religious persuasions. I'm not certain what you would call it, but I call it unfair Prejudice and Bigotry.
Back in 2000 I was working in the Reno, Nevada area as a Reader and there was a regional issue with two sisters that were literally terrorizing the local Hispanic and Native American population by pronouncing curses and threatening hexes and the genera gambit of antiquated silliness. Unfortunately it was not viewed as "silliness" to the people these "ladies" were targeting, for in their cultures magick was still very much real and alive; religiously and culturally these people had been deliberately targets and were being exploited by two very cruel con-artists and their families.
I was about to step forward and had even offered my assistance to local authorities in investigating the two when a press conference was set by several other local Readers that essentially exposed the two and their misdeeds to the local media; Psychics doing the exposure on their own, without any assistance or guidance by a "Magician" or so-called "Debunker".
I was told by a member of this delegation that they deliberately kept me out of the action because of my associations in the professional magic world; they wanted this to be "their" statement and not another headline for yet another self-important magician, which, unfortunately seems to be the main cause behind the aforementioned assumption -- the lie that "all" Readers are duplicitous con-men.
The Moral of the Story
It's a simple one -- the Psychic Community detests dishonesty of any sort and will take the initiative to clean its own house and thus, protect you, the consumer, as best we can when it comes to the real confidence scheme and potentially dangerous cult situations. We do this selfishly as well, for the ugliness they create hurts our profession and limits our ability to know a reasonable sense of income and livelihood.
Critics of the Psychic industry love to point fingers to that minority of "celebrity" Readers who garner outrageous incomes. True to their own duplicitous nature, they strive to not let the public see the fact that few full-time working Psychics garner more than a $45,000.00 to maybe $50,000.00 a year personal income; most hover some $10,000.00 or more beneath that median level.
The cynics are likewise quick to ignore those in our industry that simply do not charge; especially in times of need. Even I went through a dozen years of embracing the traditional thought of service; accepting only barter -- gifts and tokens of appreciation
I bring this information forward to serve as a warning and to likewise extend to you my time and service when it comes to issues of Psychic Fraud. While I may not be able to physically address the situation, I can most certainly direct you to people that can and will help rut out such trouble-makers and make your community a safe place to live.
